QUEENS SCHOOL TO BE NAMED AFTER AGEE
A new middle school school is currently under construction on Astoria Boulevard in East Elmhurst. The school, which is scheduled to open this fall, will be named the Tommie L. Agee Middle School, PS 419 after the late Mets centerfielder.
The new 98,000 square foot public school will serve as an educational home to 650 children (6-8th grade) in the Queens community. In addition, Agee’s life and career will be honored across the site. The school is located five blocks from where the Agee’s lived in Queens.
In a recent social media post, Agee’s wife (Maxine) and daughter (J’nelle) wrote:
”… Our mission was to keep Tommie’s name alive and continue his desire to provide aid to charities, needy families and award scholarships to students. We are overwhelmed with joy and gratitude that this new school in East Elmhurst will continue Tommie’s legacy for generations to come.”
A dedication will be held in August. A formal date and time for the event will be announced this summer.
