New management restored confidence in a bitter fan base, aggressively seeking free agents while developing two plum prospects — slugger Darryl Strawberry and wunderkind pitcher Dwight Gooden — who paid instant dividends. The blend of talented youth and all-star veterans hit a towering peak in 1986 when a raucous, cocky team of destiny took the National League by storm and produced a dramatic comeback in the World Series, triumphing over the Boston Red Sox.

1980-1989

The 1980’s Mets will be remembered for its World Series title season: 1986. The team won a franchise-record 108 games (116 including post season). Two years later the Mets recorded another 100-win season, but fell short of another Series appearance. The Mets recorded a 816-743 record during the decade, a .523 winning percentage.
