The New York Mets carried a 6-4 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals going to the bottom of the eighth inning. The Cardinals battered Mets reliever Bill Wakefield in an 11-run inning. The Cards would go on to win the game, 15-7, at Busch Stadium.
The New York Times reported:
The New York Mets committed four errors, some near‐errors and gave up three successive home runs in the eighth inning today to the St. Louis Cardinals. The result: an 11‐run inning for St. Louis, the biggest in the National League this season, and a 15‐7 victory for the Cards. Long before Ken Boyer whacked the sixth grand‐slam homer of his career and Bill White and Tim McCarver followed with homers, the Mets permitted St. Louis so many chances that only two of the 11 runs were earned. Sixteen Cardinals batted in the eighth. Bill Wakefield got absolutely no support, but he also served up some fat pitches. During that travesty on major league play, the Mets committed three successive errors in one inning. Today, they had three successive errors again as they lost all semblance of good play.
